Merseyside Police works with Transcomm to help tackle crime and improve productivity
Mobile data experts and BT redcare Group company,Transcomm,is providing an innovative mobile technology initiative to Merseyside Police linking mobile data terminals in patrol vehicles to the Mobitex network, enabling officers to access detailed information directly from the Police National Computer (PNC) and other systems, helping to identify criminals and known suspects more effectively. Officers are able to carry out their own roadside PNC checks, reducing the administrative burden of control room staff and raising police effectiveness.
Using Microbus' devices in patrol vehicles and operating over the secure Mobitex network, owned and operated by Transcomm, police officers in the field will be able to access the PNC to check vehicle registrations for stolen or un-licensed status, and wanted and missing person profiles a lot faster and more efficiently, freeing up traditional police radio for voice calls, and since information arrives in text form, removing ambiguity.
The final phase of the project will include the addition of further capabilities such as the ability to file incident reports while in the field, rather than having to return to the station, further improving police productivity and maximising officers’ time outside of the station.
Merseyside Police, like many other UK police authorities, already use Transcomm’s communications network to track the location of police patrol vehicles and allow fast, secure and reliable computer-aided despatch. This new initiative is a logical progression, enabling the force to improve overall incident response by streamlining the hundreds of routine checks made each month, providing an improved command and control service to the Merseyside region.
Two Phase Implementation
The system will be implemented in two phases, beginning with 135 vehicles in the Wirral area and Merseyside’s Operational Support Unit in October 2005, and extending to the rest of the force’s 450 patrol vehicles during 2006 and 2007.
"There is a tremendous opportunity with systems like the one we are deploying at Merseyside to help police forces improve efficiency and response times in the community. It allows many routines to become automated helping the Police Officer in field and aiding crime detection rates,"says Kevin McNulty, CEO of Transcomm.
"This initiative demonstrates how BT Transcomm offers mobile solutions that deliver benefits through its own highly resilient and secure network. This is why our wireless solutions and services are used by the emergency services across the UK,” he concludes.
