Queensland Police Keep the Peace with Acom
For over a decade, Zetron has been providing the Queensland Police Service of Queensland, Australia, with Acom Advanced Communications systems and multiplexers. The relationship is active to this day, with Acom systems having been deployed for the Queensland Police at Toowoomba and Yamanto in the last few years. The Acom systems at these locations have been running smoothly ever since their installation.
Law-enforcement communications
Effective radio-dispatch communications systems are vital to the management and execution of law-enforcement operations. They ensure that emergency calls are received and responded to, and that officers are dispatched where and when they’re needed. They also help a department track, manage and coordinate their staff and operations effectively.
Once such systems are installed, they must be attended to and updated over time to incorporate advances in technology. They must also respond to changes in the ways law-enforcement activities are conducted.
All of this underscores the importance of the long-term relationship between Zetron and the Queensland Police Service.
Toowoomba updates its Acom
In July of 2004, Zetron sold and installed an Acom system for the Queensland Police at Toowoomba in southeastern Queensland. Toowoomba obtained the new equipment as part of an upgrade of the police telecommunication facility, which included an increase in their number of dispatchers.
Even before this upgrade, however, Toowoomba had been using a smaller Acom system that was running on a Microsoft Windows 3.1-based video display unit (VDU). The agency was very satisfied with the performance and reliability of their Acom system. So when the time came to update the equipment, they decided to install a new version of Acom.
Ditto for Yamanto
The second and more recent project for the Queensland Police was an installation of Acom at Yamanto. The new system was installed in Yamanto’s new, expanded police communications facility.
"For this project, Zetron supplied and installed a nine-position Acom system," says Max McKay, Operations Manager for Zetron Australasia. "It was the same as the system they were using at Toowoomba."
Why Acom?
There are good reasons why Acom is repeatedly chosen for mission-critical operations such as law-enforcement agencies.
Acom is a fully digital switching and multiplexing system that includes the most up-to-date dispatch console technology. In addition, Acom’s end-to-end digital architecture integrates
voice (radio and telephone), data, paging and video (through a Web browser or LAN). This makes it highly flexible and easy to use. And because Acom can be configured for full redundancy with hot-standby equipment, it also ensures the highest levels
of system integrity and reliability.
The Acom systems that were implemented for Toowoomba and Yamanto both include the following:
They provide access to PABX, PSTN telephone lines, and hotlines.
They allow operators to use Acom’s selective-calling feature to access VHF and UHF radios.
Upgraded PC hardware and software support voice logging, utility audio, and alarm inputs and outputs.
Meeting high standards of performance
McKay says that the installations at Toowoomba and Yamanto went very smoothly. "In Toowoomba, the original Acom remained in service until the new one was fully installed and tested," he says. "And the cutover was problem free. In Yamanto, because the department was moving to a new facility, no cutover was required. The system was installed, commissioned, and operational within three weeks."
According to McKay, the systems continue to function very well for both Toowoomba and Yamanto. "The Acom systems are performing up to the high standards expected of them," he says. "They have been failure-free since their installation, demonstrating the reliability of both Zetron and Acom."
