Nature: we saw in New Orleans just how vicious it can be.No matter how often images of hurricanes, tornados, ice storms or earthquakes are broadcast there is no way to comprehend just how much destructive power is unleashed during such an event.

And once again we saw public safety staff putting themselves at risk to do what ever they could for the people affected. And whilst the images broadcast concentrated on the victims and the direct support they were receiving let’s not forget the multitude of staff providing Control Centre and support functions ‘behind the scenes’.

Hurricane Katrina came sharply in to view at the APCO Annual Conference and Exposition in Denver over the period 21st -25th August 2005 with many delegates being recalled to duty towards the end of the conference as Katrina approached and it became

clear that a major incident was imminent.BAPCO has passed on a formal message of support and condolences to those involved and affected.

The conference itself was important for BAPCO in that it gave the elected officers an opportunity to meet the APCO Board and air our concerns in respect of international development, a problem that has been building for some time but which came to a head during the summer months.

It was clear throughout the discussions just how easy it is for culture and poor communications to cause problems.

However I’m pleased to report that following a series of long and at times frank exchanges a way forward was agreed. It will take time and effort from all parties to make the relationship work but I firmly believe that the benefits are worth the investment and energy.

I can report that this message of an international public safety family helping, advising, sharing information and building on best practice was placed before the APCO Board, Executive and general membership on a number of occasions.I’m hopeful that we have made our point and that progress will now be made.

Looking closer to home, by the time this journal is published we will have had the first of our regional road shows. The format and speakers look first class,I’m looking forward to attending and participating in what promise to be stimulating events.

May I also say it’s good to see that contracts for the Ambulance Service Radio Replacement Project have been signed and announcements made in respect of the Fire Service Regional Control Centre locations.

Clearly not everyone will be happy with the decisions reached but it is progress and progress that I believe we all needed to see happen.

Finally as summer comes to an end and the Ashes return to their rightful home it’s a good time to start thinking about reserving space in your diary for the BAPCO 2006 Annual Conference.

Next year event will be held at the Business Design Centre, Islington,London between the 25th and 27th April 2006.

I know that Tim O’Connor and his organising committee are already pulling together an exciting event, make a note of the dates!

And one final thought, this is your Association,if you have any thoughts or comments to make please drop me a note or give me a call and have your say.
